10:10 revisited

Last year we told you about our intention to reduce our environmental impact. Now it’s time to review how we’ve done…

First and foremost, we’ve made big changes in our corporate fleet. Our fleet is now a shared car pool, which all eligible members of staff can make the most of. This reduces our mileage substantially, and ensure that we liftshare as much as possible when it comes to meetings. But what is the Proctors choice of vehicle? The ultra-green Prius, of course.

Saving more than the environment
Doing the right thing has delivered tangible rewards. These efficient hybrids dramatically reduce fuel consumption, tax is lower, and we’ve waved goodbye to the congestion charge when it comes to client meetings in London. And our company-car drivers are pleased with the move, as Matt Jupp, Account Director, explains:

"My Prius gives me a significant saving on fuel costs, it is much more relaxing to drive than anything I’ve had before and it is bristling with new technology like a hard drive for all my music."

We’re also working hard to use public transport, and reduce the journeys we make, working with our clients to conduct meetings online via Webex. We also enable homeworking through remote file access.

On your bike?
Finally, we’re actively encouraging walking, jogging and cycling to work – in our ongoing building refurbished, we’re building a shower room for the team, and we already provide access to tax free bikes. It’s clearly working, as 40% of the team walks or cycles to work on a regular basis.

Reduce
Transport is only part of the picture. We’ve also taken active steps to reduce waste, reuse where we can and recycle as much as possible. From a policy that sees us print only what’s necessary to stringent rules about turning off lights and technology, reducing use and waste has been a big priority this year. And it’s helped us make substantial savings.

Reuse
Reusing is also important. Our first response to failing kit is to talk to the team at ifixit to see if it can be given a new lease of life. This means stretching our ICT budget further, and reducing landfill. Not that we chuck old technology – far from it. When technology is past the point of efficient professional perfomance, we ensure that is reused or recyled through WEE-registered recycling schemes that ensure computers find new homes in developing countries.

Recycle
Last, but certainly not least, we’re doing well on the recyling front too, separating our waste carefully and recycling papers, plastics, cartridges, cans, glass and more. Which is fantastic news… unless you end up on recycling duty!
